Ein netter DoW II forum user hat eine "kleine" Zusammenfasung der PAX live demo gepostet:
http://community.dawnofwar2.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=1601
QuoteDisplay MoreThe things I remember from Mark Noseworthy playing the DoW 2 'gameplay demo'. This is most of the stuff that should be in the HD Video that comes out whenever it gets put out, so if you want to watch that, this will be as much as I can remember and you might want to wait.
-----------
Mark and Jonny started off talking about how relic is trying to change the way we play RTS'. There is a big emphasis on the Single Player mission and how they understand that gamers are sick and tired of building a base just to have to re-do it all in the next mission. There isn't an base building in the Single Player campaign. Instead of focusing on huge armies battling, the single player experience is trying to be made more personal. There is a huge emphasis in DoW 2 on squads. They want you to care about your units. Mark had a story about some mission in Company of Heroes where there were only a few squads and they'd watch videos of players playing this mission with their nose to the screen, wincing at the death of each unit. The next mission would have a 'normal'-style game play and they'd see gamers sit back and go on autopilot. For DoW II's single player (which as you should know by now is Space Marines only), you have essentially a commander-type unit with some of his squad members (that Jonny referred to as Red Shirts, like in Star Trek (since they can die. ) ). In the build of the game they were playing, the Force Commander was named 'Jonny' and looked like Ebbert, which made everyone laugh. Then there was an Assault Marine commander and a Scout Commander and a Heavy Weapons commander, I think. Also, each commander can level up a few different stats to make them better at attacking or defending... I think they can also unlock abilities through this progression.
Before going into a mission, you're presented with a view of the planet where the game takes place. There are areas that kind of look like sections from a game of Risk that represented missions you could partake in. You select a zone and then can outfit your squads. It shows a portrait of each commander on the right side of the screen with the selected commander at the front where you can equip him (and by virtue, the rest of the squad. No individual customization I don't think; just per-squad). They showed examples of different armor you could give each Commander as well as a lot of different unlockable weapons. Orbital Cannon is one of the weapons for the Force Commander that is "late in the game", I think Mark said. Jonny replied to an audience question that yes, there would be armors that were more suitable in different situations.
The mission they played had an Ork horde in an area that, by clearing out, would gain you influence in the area. Influence is probably not a good word... The area would be strategically useful. They showed how cover works much like CoH vs. original DoW -- as you mouse to things that can be used as cover, dots show up around that item (such as a pile of sandbags) where your units would stand if you selected that item for use as cover. There was a nearby building that had some Orks in it and they had a large gun. Some units were run to cover in front of the building and the Scout squad was taken to the side. From there, the Scout squad sniped the building unit with an ability that is 1-shot, 1-kill.
The units advanced forward and ran into some Tyranids (which killed some marines for show but they made short work of them) and then a WarTrakk. The Wartrakk plowed through some of the foliage as well as a wall and started giving the units hell. A Melta bomb was thrown on the trakk, which seemed to drive off in a panic, though it was still shooting at them. There was a counter counting down the time until the bomb exploded (it started at maybe 3.9 seconds... I don't remember, but it was single-digit with a tenth-of-a-second decimal place). The melta bomb took out the 'trakk and the Assault Marines jumped ONTO the remaining Orks and finished them off. Jonny talked about how the Assault Marines are dudes wearing 2 tons of armor, so they wanted them to make more if an impact while jumping. Throughout the course of the demo, the Assault Marines would jump into a fray and knock enemy units around a little. They also have an ability that makes them jump high and land on units for damage. Similarly, once the Wartrakk was dealt with, there was a 'Shrine' building at which you could reinforce your squads that have lost guys. Those reinforcements come from Orbit and the orbit pod CAN damage your units (I assume this means that it should be possible to drop squads/buildings onto enemies in multi-player. Squiggoth, meet Base. ).
The units were run through the map a bit. Noseworthy threw a grenade to cheers from the audience when it let off an awesome explosion. He did no damage with it, but said to the mic: "That was pretty awesome, so I'm going to throw another grenade." I think it damaged some landscape. The units then came up on an Ork encampment, but the Orks didn't have line of sight, so they couldn't see the marine squad, which was awesome. The Devs planned an 'ambush' wherein they attacked the Ork camp with just a few mouse clicks. One of the awesome things I noticed was that you could (presumably) right-click to send units to location X, just like DoW, but there's more: I'm pretty sure that when you right-click, you can "pull" in a direction which causes your units to face that direction when they get to that location. Visually, there's an arrow that appears on-screen when you do this. It seemed very intuitive and I'm glad I won't have to mess around with positioning as much to get guys to face the right direction.
The attack on the Ork Encampment I think had a grenade thrown into a tower to take out the Orkies in it, with some Assault Marines jumping on more guys and the Space Marines with bolters shooting everything. I remember some grenades... it was a good attack. At the end, we could see that there were more enemies northward, but a wall around the encampment blocked the path. Jonny said: "Uh... Normally we'd get through this with a grenade, but due to poor inventory management we are out of them." followed by Mark: "No matter..." and he used the Assault Marines Leap ability to land on the wall and knock it down. Also, where Assault Marines land? That creates a small divot in the world, and that small divot (very small... it looked like "in-game inches") could be used as cover. It's probably not much cover, but cover. I think there were some Killa Kans outside of the base, but they were taken out.
They went north to a "Shrine to the Emperor" that was taken over by the Orks. There was direction in the form of a woman that had given the mission prior that said it would be good to take over the shrine and bring the Emperor's influence to the area, yadda yadda yadda. The fight was pretty quick. The Devs said that these shrines can reinforce your units, but also it presents a strategic place to own. While you're looking at the Sector Map, you'll get alerts that the building is being attacked and whatnot. Then it becomes your choice on whether you want to go and defend it or let the Orks have it. Mark said that "Defending missions are really fun", as you start at the base and swarms come at you. Sounded pretty awesome to me.
After the shrine was taken over, they Orbit Bombed some orks in the distance and had a pretty awesome all-out fight. The Orbital Cannon looks *amazing*. I think I saw it lift some units off the ground (think: 'Akira'), but I'm not sure if they were stuck there necessarily; wasn't obvious.
Finally, the squads were brought to the end-area of the mission. The mission, you see, had been about a Warboss in the area that the Space Marines were to kill. Well, here was the Warboss. He was HUGE and he was a boss battle. The devs said that they wanted players to have like big payoff battles at the end of missions, and this was one of them. There was some cut-scene-esque dialogue before the fight. He had a large red health bar at the top of the screen. During the fight, some Grotz kept coming out but I don't remember what they were doing... repairing or giving him health or something? Mark nearly lost the fight, but he did beat it in the end, and that was the end of the demo.
Another gameplay note: The 'Red Shirt' marines can die. The named Commander units "get knocked out". If a Commander unit gets knocked out in the middle of a mission, one of the other Commander Units can come and revive him. If you lose all of your Commander units, you lose the map. If you lose all of your Red Shirts, who cares, heh.
The game looks great. The "build number" was 17 per the top left corner and the relic folks mentioned a Spring 2009 release. They also said that YES, people who bought Soulstorm WILL get into the beta pool. (It was worded in such a way as to imply that not *all* Soulstorm users would get into the beta, but maybe I'm reading too much into it.)
Matchmaking: NO MORE RELIC LOGIN. DoW 2 is using Games for Windows Live as its matchmaking service. This is not a bad thing at all: In case you missed it, Microsoft made GfW: Live free back in July. Live for Xbox 360 still requires a fee, but if you use GfW:Live, you can still send notes to your XBL friends, etc. I use GfW:Life for Halo 2 and Shadowrun and I quite like the service. It should really fit the way DoW games come together. A user asked why they weren't using Steam and they said: "We evaluated lots of options and GfW really looked like the best for our game type. We looked at Steam and just felt it wasn't quite what we wanted." I am very excited to see this in action when the game comes out.
If I have mis-remembered or forgotten anything, I apologize: I saw the game and the demo on Friday and it is now Tuesday and my memory is a little rusty, heh. Anything I've forgotten you'll see in the HD Video, anyway. I'll answer questions if I can, but I wrote as much as I could remember.
Swag: For those of us that went to the Trivia, we got Relic 'r' pins (I'll take a picture later). There were also relic patches. There were some relic shirts that were left-overs from a company shirt-printing. At the DoW 2 Panel /everyone/ got posters that were the same as The Standard seen above (minus writing). A bunch of us got DoW 2 t-shirts as well.

Will synapse coverage create a visible change in unit tactics and AI behavior (as some previews imply) or is it just a morale/stat modifier?
With the new system will the game balance be more close to the table game or to the original DoW ?
The AI in the skirmish games was very poor in the original game how much will it be improved for DoW2 except having its own will for taking cover like in CoH ?
Long range weapons will they still be useless like it is a case for whirlwind at the moment or the basilisk ?
Will we be able to repaire vehicles and to heal the infantry ?
Will there be air units as close air support that the force commander or sergent can call instead building them like it is a case in soul storm ?
Will Dawn of War II be as influenced by dice rolls and luck as Company of Heroes (much to the chagrin of some players, to the the love of others) is?
Are there currently plans to include every 40k race into the game eventually, or rather leave out some for the sake of refining existing races more thorougly?
Will Relic units be back, or just special characters for the campaign?
Will campaigns for the other races be created after releasing DoW 2 ? Either as free content with a patch or as DLC.
How does the equivalent of the stealth/camo/infiltration system known from COH and DOW work in DOW2?
Is Taldeer in Dawn of War 2?
Will gibbing of infantry (like in CoH, where crab flails and heavy arty strikes blow infantry to bite-sized gibbets) be in, perhaps in sync-kills (decapitation, ripping off limbs etc)?
Will there be personal teleporters like in DoW I?
Do you keep any secret for us (5th race for example or hints to the future expansion) till the release?
Is there any unit abilities in DOW 2? If so, give a few examples of some ablities that units have. :o)
Will we see other Imperial forces than SM and probably Imperial Guard PDF in campaign? (like Inquisitor from original DoW. Ordo Xenos comes to mind…)
Will artillery be back in DoW 2, and this time receive the love it deserves? In other words, if artillery is in, will it be bad ass & mofo as it should be?
Will the weapons have same damage scale on all units? Meaning weapons A does B damage to all kind of targets.
Are there currently any plans for a collector's edition?
Will DoW2 have a much more sophisticated army painter that will have more colour areas to influence and the ability to colour not just armies, but individual units within an army?
Are the animations we have seen so far final or is it still work in progress. I'm specially hinting at larger units and their missing turning animations which lets units like the Wraithlord and Carnifex look buggy while they are trying to find a path through the environment and other units.
Seeing the game will be part of the Games For Windows titles (which are most online games are on Vista). Will DOW2 use Windowa XP or Vista?
It was earlier stated that the campaign will be coop, how will this work?
When ( If any ) will the demo be released?
Will DOW 2 support a unit category system similar to TT's Force Organization system? In other words, will units be divided into more than just 2 categories - I.E. Squad and Support Cap?
For the co-op campaign, how is wargear and experience going to be distributed among different players?
Will Dawn of War 2's unit voice responses be as detailed (and hopefully more so) as Company of Heroes? Specifically, will we see different responses based on the proximity of a hero unit or a particularly intimidating enemy?
will all interaction be fully-scripted or will there be interactive cutscenes?
Have the factors that made Company of Heroes so difficult to mod beyond the superficial level been addressed for Dawn of War 2?
Will the campaign mode, which we have already seen to be more RPG-style, incorporate any elements of moral choice? It has aleady been confirmed that you can choose "civilians vs wargear", but will there be lasting consequences for a long-term pattern of actions, as we see in RPGs like Mass Effect, Fable or Oblivion?
