Grafik is imho - ziemlich egal. Solangs kein effekt-overkill is.

    Display Spoiler

If we presume the pings are similar between the servers then the video would show there is a [100ms + your ping] delay on character movement. It's pretty easy to infer that Dota 2 has a flat 100ms delay.

Some if this can be contributed to interpolation. Whenever the game gets unit information from the server, it waits for a tick to get the next frame of unit data so that all the units will "know where to move". Once the game has the state at now, now-1, and now-2 it will interpolate using the oldest 2 states for the rendered frames it gets new state data to use. The delay time is completely predictable and should be equal to the time to get 2 ticks of data. This sort of delay exists in any game and won't really be fixed by rate commands unless you could tweak them to the point where your character is only at the newest state. This interpolation delay is apparently equal to 50ms, or 2 ticks at an update rate of 40hz.

How does this differ from HoN? Since HoN has a delay of roughly your ping time it's clear that it sends a movement command to the server and waits for an acknowledgement and then proceeds to move the units speculatively based on the data the client already has. The client probably simulates the creep AI and relies on potentially out of date positional data on heroes (it can know issued commands so it'll be close, but they can change rapidly).

So what can Valve do to fix this? The only way to get HoN like responsiveness is to move the players hero speculatively. Given they have a movement delay of your ping time your client will always have a relatively recent state and will only get out of sync by a couple ticks at most. It's a fair bit more ugly and certainly less easy than Valve's approach but it would also improve the whines about casting times (they're subject to the same interpolation that movement is).

Quick note: This isn't a "fake delay" like some RTSes (and probably Warcraft 3) have to hide the way RTS networking works by syncing input, it's purely a byproduct of the simplified entity networking & display model as I explained above.

You may notice that the interpolation delay only accounts for half of the total delay time. Without seeing the ping of HoN & the netgraph of the dota clip it's pretty much impossible to attribute it to any one thing. A 2 tick delay is a weird anomaly but a sample size of 2 is pretty abysmal. Speculative player movement (or input prediction) can reduce the interpolation delay down to whatever their tickrate is (Source default is 15ms) and even hide the network latency at the cost of accuracy. The 2 tick delay, if real, could be some sort of (probably fixable!) weirdness in the networking.

This is all, of course, speculation and the Valve engineers know what they're doing and have many orders of magnitude more information than I do, so grain of salt, etc.

EDIT: For more on RTS networking and what some RTS games do you can check out this article under the "Peer-to-Peer Lockstep" section (and the 1500 archers link, if you're really feeling ballsy). It seems like Warcraft 3 has a completely intentional ~200ms delay before any input gets processed to give it time to wait for ping, jitter, slow computers, slightly desynced computers, and dropped packets. If I'm not mistaken even a modern RTS like Starcraft 2 has the same sort of delay window (although it is reduced a bit) which can be dynamically adjusted based on how the players' network connections hold up.

    Geiler Trailer! :O

@Attack animations: Gibts in HoN genauso?

Joa, Master of Puppets is auch rel genial, The Number of the Beast ... jedes Genre hat seine Meilensteine :D

    schnulze? :D

@topic: Give it a try. Wenns nich hinhaut - ok is scheiße. Aber wenns länger hält, dann is extrem gut :D
