A lot of the time I see these threads pop up where some newb to average player is whining about overpowered "tac spam". They are all basing their opinion on some games they played in 2vs2 or 3vs3 where something like a huge amount of tactical marines is possible. Yet they never figure out the obvious counters to masses of troops that are clumped up.
I seriously also don't understand the whole argument that its easier to use the tac blob compared to other strategies? There is absolutely no difference between selecting 1 hero, scout, 3 tacs and either focus firing or doing attack move from selecting 1 nid hero, 3 hormagaunts 1 warrior, ravener squad and using the attack move...
At the most critical people can get 4 tacticals fully upgraded (20 pop per fully upgraded tac) with a scout or two. I'm sorry but the opposing factions can easily overwhelm these numbers even in direct confrontation.

When we look at 1vs1 game play we instantly meet some issues, for example the starting unit for the space marine the scout costs 210 req while normally in 1.3 Sluggas and Guardians were 270 and Hormagaunts 240 and were balanced towards that price. Now in 1.4-1.5 the Sluggas, Guardians, Hormagaunts are worth 300 req and are buffed accordingly towards that price. In all the previous patches the scout could not win vs any of these units without upgrades and still can't especially with all the new buffs. So to keep it short the SM are already cheated out on atleast 90 req and have much weaker starting unit.
Furthermore a Tactical marine costs 500 req and can't beat a 300 req Slugga boy squad or 300 req Hormagaunt or 400 req banshee squad 1vs1. So this forces the SM player to group all off his units together and fight with them all at once. Again while the enemy can easily effort to still be capping the map with 1 unit while fighting the SM at the same time. Think about it for a second starting slugga boy squad is capping the map while the first engagement is between SM FC, Tactical and Scout vs Ork WB and 2 sluggas. All the Ork has to do is send 1 slugga at the tac 1 at the scout and WB at FC to tie him up and pop Waaghh. The SM has to retreat otherwise he will lose way to much.
So the SM already lost a good portion off the map control at this point. Normally SM could get a heavy dev squad to back him up but because it now costs 30 power thats to expensive because you need shotguns for your scouts.
With the second engagement the Orks would by now have gotten 1 extra shoota squad with bigger shoota upgrade. While SM should have build another Tac and have gotten shotgun upgrades on scouts.
The engagement FC, 2 tacs 1 shotgun scout vs WB 3 Slugga's 1 shoota. Again all the Ork has to do is use the shoota to supress the FC while WB+1 Slugga charges 1 tactical squad and 1 slugga the other tactical and last slugga just chase the scouts. Pop Waaghh on any of the squads and all the SM can do is retreat and lose several units in the progress. At this point the Orks should have almost full map control and should charge SM gens bash them and retreat to heal up.
Same scenario can be repeated with Nids vs SM also. The only faction SM can somewhat fight and actually win the first several engagements against is the Eldar. I can't mention whats going to happen in 1.5 but whit all the changes even against Eldar SM would fall in this category.
Space marines seriously lack capping power because off slow expensive tacticals and fragile un-upgraded scouts. So they have to clump to be able to do something yet even then they can't beat same cost enemy squads early on!
Also there is no accessible melee squads available to just soak up damage. The 550 + 50 p ASM squad is not cost effective unless the enemy builds stationary weaponry or snipers. But this is mostly not the case because the stationary weapons cost to much power right now.
The heavy dev squad is also not cost effective because he is to easily countered. From basic hero abilities like teleport, tunnels or stealth to specialized jump squads to sniper or just simple flanking or nading. While in the end all the heavy dev squads are doing is just suppression with pathetic damage.
On a competitive level there is really a lot wrong with the space marines and they are anything but overpowered. And all I see is that they are getting nerfs left and right without any serious boosts.
