Hello Jervis
Regularly since the first issue in German I read enthusiastically the White Dwarf magazine and follow your comments of the Standard Bearer (since it started) regarding this vast hobby launched by Games Workshop. Right now we are at issue no. 147, soon it will be no. 150. At no stage I ever thought this would be lasting that long, but I am verbally possessed by it as you will find out in my explanations below.
Please allow me to start off telling you a bit about myself first before getting to the point that motivated me to write you:
I collect, paint Citadel miniatures and play diverse systems of Games Workshop for 13 years now. It all started as a shop close at my hometown started as a rogue trader selling Games Workshop products. I was into model building of second world war figures and began to build and paint citadel miniatures at first. It was Christmas 1995 as father Christmas got me the Warhammer 40.000 system. Soon I started to create and build up my own Space Marine army which came out of a combined battle force of Ultramarines and Crimsons Fist: The Demolition Legion.
Back then I did not know any other hobbyist but luckily popped into one after graduating from school and starting my work training as a dental technician. It did not take long for me to realise that a dental laboratory is the perfect place equipped with the best tools needed for this hobby. As I looked over another trainees shoulder and detected him doing the same as me (everything else but not what we were supposed to): converting Space Marines. Harry was at the end of the training contrary to me who just started. It was tough to convert metal miniatures at home armed with a cutter only. Much easier it was with a tool holder … Harry accompanied me along the training and I was glad to have learned from him since his work got countrywide the award of the best technician at the practical exams. In the same way I got to know how to professionally convert miniatures and we fine tuned our paint jobs.
At this stage my deepest feelings for the emperor got contaminated by the powers of chaos and I only heard myself crying: Blood for the blood god! My soul was dedicated to the blood lord. Beside the many other miniatures I have collected and painted - beyond them you will find Necromunda gangs, Warhammer dragons and miniatures, Space Marines, Eldars … - I started the era of the Khorne Chaos Space Marines which over the years became my largest army and I still prefer it before the others for gaming.
This is where it leads me to the point that occupies me for quite some time now. I started playing 40k when the II. edition was out. I could follow and adopt easily to the following editions no. III. and IV. (and surely V. which is at hand). I was overwhelmed by the marvellous Chaos Space Marine miniatures that came along. As my army extended I upgraded my miniatures always that way to fine tune it to the World Eaters background. Khorne Berzerkers at mass for standard supported by the death bringing blood letters was mandatory whereas Juggernaut units were one of my favourite elite choices which sadly was killed by the new codex rules.
For years I have fine tuned my chaos army and whenever a new codex was published I had to dismiss some of my miniatures in order to be able to play the game. New miniatures had to be upgraded the way it was demanded. In most cases I was happy to collect the new miniatures but I also bemoaned the loss of my already existing ones that had to give way for new ones. I accept this to be the way of developing the game. However, especially in case of the new Chaos Space Marine Codex the legions like World Eaters or Death Guard are no more as we used to know them. Even the change of the rules for the Khorne Berzerkers was not easy as a follower of Khorne. All rumour I heard of what is to come came into being.
The same seems to happen to the Chaos Daemon Codex. If it is going the same way as it was with the Chaos Space Marine Codex it will be tough for all Chaos Space Marine gamers that have always entrusted parts of their army to the daemons. Combined armies of Chaos Space Marines and (god specific) Daemons are no longer? Why would a Space Marine Army then would be allowed to activate daemon hunters? Daemons like blood letters undergo changes as they will have no armour any longer and their power weapons will be lost? These are examples that do not go along with the background of chaos. My army will not be able to be encounter other armies in battles unless major changes are done again.
Yes, I am not thrilled about these changes as I have been collecting for years to be able to have an army the way I wanted to have it. I am forced to change again and again. I have pumped thousands of Euros into the gigantic manufacture of Games Workshop and I would do so more readily if I would not feel that kind of compulsion in my neck rather than being able to develop my army and upgrade it more freely.
Other armies and / or systems – I am sure - are affected by the same, too. I marvel of the tremendous devotees of this hobby especially found in the group of the youth. That was the same age of my start and I spend most of my money for it.
I know research and development and resulting changes in rules are necessary to keep the hobby alive. I run riot on this but something to think about: I just think of dead systems e.g. Necromunda that is a source of a heck of fun. As an extreme I still can collect new miniatures for that system if there would be any, but no rule changes force me to do so.
What is the quality policy and objective of Games Workshop? How does customer satisfaction fit into it?
You say we as hobbyists can write to you for any hobby belonging issue. I don’t know whether I am at the right addressee and if you even going to read what a hobbyist (and that is not solely my opinion) is writing. Don’t get me wrong on this – I try to contribute to the hobby I am engaged in. I can’t judge whether the choice of words I used express my feelings towards Games Workshop in a way that you can grasp the meaning of it.
Nevertheless, I hope you catch that plea of mine and waste at least a minor part of your day on what I try to bring across even if I am not able to force anyone at GW to do so. I would be more than happy to read what you think of the incitements of a hobbyist.
Best regards,
Chris
